Black Widows Spiders grow to be about 1 ½ inches long. They have predominantly black bodies, and the females feature a noticeable red hourglass figure on their abdomens. Black widows are the most dangerous spider in the United States.
Brown Recluses grow to be anywhere from ¼ of an inch to 3/5th of an inch long. They have predominantly brown bodies, and they feature a dark brown violin-like shape on their abdomens.
As previously stated, both of these spiders produce strong venom. As such, if you suspect a bite by either, you should seek medical assistance immediately. Other spiders common to the area include orb weavers, sac spiders, and cellar spiders. However, none of these are as dangerous to humans. Still, that doesn’t mean they are welcome guests in your home. As such, it is important for you to take the necessary precautions to keep them out of your house.
Spider Prevention Techniques
Spiders enter homes when they are searching for other pests to eat. As such, in order to be as effective as possible, all spider prevention techniques should be done in conjunction with other general pest prevention techniques. These techniques include:
- Store all food properly in containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Wipe up any spills from countertops or floors immediately.
- Refrain from keeping dirty dishes stacked in your sink.
- Store trash in bins with tight-sealing lids.
- Take out the trash regularly.
- Fix any leaky pipes or fixtures within your home.
- Use dehumidifiers to lower the moisture levels in your home.
- Wipe away any webs as you spot them.
- Install door sweeps on all exterior doors.
- Install screens in both windows and exterior doors.
- Repair any rips or tears in existing screens.
- Install weather stripping to fill in gaps around windows and doors.
- Fill in any cracks or holes in the foundation of your home.
